Car rental in Crete: what you need, what it covers and how to avoid surprises

Renting a car is the best way to see Crete. Here is what documents you need, how insurance works, what the roads are like, and the small things that save you money and stress.

What you need to rent a car

ItemWhat to know
Driving licenceAn EU licence is enough. With a UK photocard licence you usually do not need an International Driving Permit. With a licence from outside Europe (for example USA, Canada, Australia) bring an International Driving Permit as well.
AgeUsually at least 21 to 23 years old, with a licence held for at least one year. Drivers under 25 often pay a young driver fee.
CardA credit card in the name of the main driver is usually needed for the deposit. Some companies accept debit cards, ask first.
IDPassport or EU identity card.

Insurance in plain words

  • Third party liability is always included by law.
  • CDW (collision damage waiver) covers damage to the car, but usually with an excess you still pay, often several hundred euros.
  • Full insurance (FDW or SCDW) lowers the excess to zero or close to it. In Crete it is usually worth it.
  • Often excluded even with full cover: tyres, glass, the underside of the car, and damage on dirt roads. Read this part before you sign.

Driving in Crete

  • The north coast road (BOAK) links Kissamos, Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos. It is being upgraded but many parts are still single lane, so drive carefully.
  • Local habit: slower cars move onto the hard shoulder to let you overtake. Do it only when the shoulder is clear and you can see ahead.
  • Speed limits: 50 km/h in towns and 90 km/h on most open roads, unless signs say otherwise.
  • Alcohol: the limit is 0.5 g/l of blood, and 0.2 g/l for drivers with less than two years of experience. The safest choice is not to drink at all.
  • Mountain roads are narrow and winding with goats on the road. Allow more time than the map says.
  • Dirt roads (for example to Balos) are usually not covered by insurance. Check before you go, or take the boat from Kissamos.

Pick-up and return

  • Most local companies deliver the car to the airport (Heraklion, Chania) or the port at no extra cost. Ask when you book.
  • Take photos and a video of the car, including wheels and the fuel gauge, before you drive away.
  • Check the fuel policy. "Same to same" (return with the same level) is usually the fairest.
  • Taking a rental car on a ferry to another island normally needs written permission from the company.

Local company or big brand?

In Crete many travellers prefer local companies. They often include full insurance without excess in the price, deliver to the airport for free and do not block a large deposit on your card. Big brands have more offices and newer fleets in some cases. Compare the final price with full insurance, not the starting price.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an International Driving Permit in Crete?

Not with an EU licence. With a UK photocard licence usually not. With a licence from outside Europe, such as the USA or Australia, bring an International Driving Permit.

Is full insurance worth it in Crete?

Usually yes. Roads can be narrow and parking tight, and full cover removes or lowers the excess you would pay after damage.

Can I drive to Balos with a rental car?

The last part is a dirt road that many insurance policies exclude. Ask your rental company, or take the boat from Kissamos port.

When should I book a car for Crete?

For July and August book several weeks ahead. In spring and autumn prices are lower and there is more choice.
