Arriving in Santorini

Ferries arrive at Athinios, a small port below the cliffs, about 10 km from Fira. Local buses to Fira take about 20 minutes and usually wait for the big ferries (pay the driver in cash). Taxis are few, so a pre-booked transfer saves a long queue.

Good to know

  • If your ferry has an outside deck, go out as it sails into the caldera: the view of the cliffs is the best welcome to the island.
  • In summer the road up from Athinios is busy when several ferries arrive together.

Ferry or flight?

The flight takes about 45 minutes, but with the trip to the airport and check-in it is rarely less than 3 to 4 hours door to door. The ferry takes you from city to port with no baggage fees, and the view is part of the trip. The flight is better if you are short of time or the sea is rough. Santorini airport guide.
